“Cuffs won’t be necessary,” Jackson Lamb tells the new Head ‘Dog’ in the first trailer for Slow Horses season four. She slaps a pair on him anyway with the retort that she’d rather not take any chances with a man “who looks like he gropes people on buses.” Affecting sensitivity, Lamb drily jokes that after such a personal insult, he might have to call HR.

Slow Horses is back, baby.

Well, almost back. The fourth season starts streaming on Apple TV+ with a double-bill on Wednesday September 4, followed by a new episode weekly until the finale arrives on October 2.

Lamb’s season four sparring partner is Emma Flyte, the new head of MI5 internal affairs, replacing former tactical unit boss Duffy. He went the way of so many of this show’s characters after the events of last season, and now Ruth Bradley’s unflappable Flyte is on ‘hit Lamb on the nose with a rolled up newspaper when he jumps on the furniture’ duty. Let’s hope she has a whole stack of Sunday supplements at the ready.

Also introduced alongside Humans and Guilt’s Ruth Bradley, is The Matrix and The Lord of the RingsHugo Weaving as ex-CIA agent and current “monster” Frank Harkness, plus a glimpse of James Callis (Battlestar Galactica) new Regent’s Park higher-up Claude Whelan alongside Kristin Scott Thomas’ slick Taverner.

As for the Slow Horses or “rejects” (“They don’t like being called that,” Lamb tells Flyte, who asks what he calls them then. “The rejects”. Of course he does.), we see River (Jack Lowden), Louisa (Rosalind Eleazar), Shirley (Aimee-Ffion Edwards), Marcus (Kadiff Kirwan), Ho (Christopher Chung) plus mysterious newcomer JK Coe (Tom Brooke). There’s even a brief appearance from Standish (Saskia Reeves) to reassure fans fearing her total absence after season three took its toll.

The big news of the trailer, other than Lamb and Flyte’s verbal back-and-forth, is the line we heard some months back in our very first look at the new season. Comedically batting away Flyte’s suggestion that Lamb might like to take a shower, he tells her that her ‘offer’ is inappropriate in the circumstances. “I mean apart from anything else, one of my team just died.” Gulp. We’re going to need a name, and depending on what it is, potentially a counselling session.

If you’ve not yet had the pleasure of this sharp-witted, hugely entertaining spy thriller adapted from the Mick Herron novels and powered by Gary Oldman’s extremely enjoyable lead performance, there’s just about time to catch up before the new episodes arrive. So what are you waiting for? Chop chop.

Slow Horses season 4 starts streaming on Apple TV+ on September 4.

Following the release of Deadpool & Wolverine, Wesley Snipes is rightfully getting some late recognition for his work in the Y2K era Blade films, but there’s another early-2000s Marvel pioneer who deserves some praise as well. Thomas Jane, who portrayed the title character in 2004’s The Punisher, was part of the same generation of early Marvel films that showed there was a massive market for superhero properties. Along with Jane’s Punisher – X-Men (2000), Elektra (2005), and yes even Ben Affleck’s Daredevil (2003) walked so the juggernaut known as the MCU could run only a few years later.

While promoting the global release of his Australian detective series, Troppo, Jane recently sat down with the Canadian constituent of Den of Geek to discuss the release of the show north of the border. Naturally, as the name of the website would suggest, the conversation tilted towards the world of comics. Jane has created a new horror comic book series called The Lycan through Renegade Entertainment, his co-owned production company that is also behind Troppo. The comic series is set to release early next year.

Jane is no stranger to the comic book world, as he has often discussed how comics were his first love, and served as the introduction to art and storytelling in childhood that inspired him to get into filmmaking. When it came time for Jane to step into the paradigmatic shoes of the Punisher two decades ago, he was already a well-versed comic authority. He took that role as an opportunity to dive into one of Marvel’s greatest characters, and read Punisher stories extensively.

Decades later, now playing Ted Conkaffey in Troppo, it hasn’t escaped Jane that he has a bit of a propensity to play damaged ex-lawmen. He even goes so far as to admit it might be “a bit of a cliche.”

“Wounded heroes are something I’m attracted to,” Jane says. “I’m always looking for that role, but that comes in many flavors. I like trying to explore, and put something on the screen that we can relate to.” It’s also very much a catharsis for the seemingly laidback Jane, and he recognizes the strange therapeutic nature of ultra-violent and traumatized characters. “You know, there’s a lot of pain in the world. It’s hard. It’s hard to wake up every day. So reflecting that in some way is a good thing.”

Of course, the major question is, would he return to once again don the iconic skull emblem, and was there an opportunity to do so recently with the cameo cavalcade within Deadpool & Wolverine, especially considering the character was brought up in the film? Jane chuckles, admits it would have been cool, but simply gives a monosyllabic response: “Nope.”

Jane does, however, go on to say that while the love for Frank still runs deep, and it would have been cool to get the call for a Deadpool cameo, the time to play him has likely passed. “I’ve kind of put that character to bed. I’m going on 56 [years old], so my dream would be to direct something close to the character of Frank Castle. I still have a soft spot for that guy.”

Jane certainly doesn’t need to explain how deep his love for The Punisher runs – it was proven in 2012 when he partnered up with Ron Perlman to create a short fan-film called Dirty Laundry, where he reprised the role. Until Marvel released The Punisher Netflix series, it could be considered the best on-screen adaptation of that character.

Knowing that Jane and Jon Bernthal very recently trained together so that the latter could prepare for his return to the character in Daredevil: Born Again, it seems Jane can’t help but stay close to The Punisher. When prompted about the possibility of helming another project, much like his short film but on a monumental Marvel scale, Jane did not even hesitate to admit the appeal.

“I’ve directed a couple episodes of Troppo and had a great time. Those are a couple of my favorite episodes from season two. I’ll be directing more, and I would love to do something in that vein. That character, that project, has yet to be nailed. We still don’t have the perfect Frank Castle film. I would absolutely love to get that off the ground, but finding the right story is going to be the challenge. Obviously it’s doable, [we] just haven’t seen it yet.”

Troppo season 1 and 2 are now streaming in the U.S. on Prime Video, and season one is being released weekly in Canada on Superchannel.

Forty years ago this summer, a perfect storm of moviemaking elements came together with almost supernatural precision: SNL alums like Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray at the height of their popularity; director Ivan Reitman and co-writer Harold Ramis at the peak of their creativity; unexpectedly innovative and convincing VFX developed by Richard Edlund on a budget because ILM was too busy; and a weathered and weary New York City that, still a decade out from “urban renewal,” proved a perfect backdrop for a comedy about working stiffs going into business.

All these elements and more seemed to capture lightning in a bottle at a specific time and place for one of the great American comedies. In retrospect, it seems almost impossible to duplicate. But that doesn’t mean there was a lack of trying. Despite Ghostbusters being a singularly deadpanned ‘80s comedy, the film has generated cartoon spinoffs, video games, and of course big screen sequels. In the last decade alone, Sony has attempted to reboot the brand several times, first with a remake and then with several fawning legacy sequels which treat the idea of four guys driving around Tribeca in a hearse with the reverence of scripture.

Each of these new iterations have their fans, and yet there remains a gnawing question: what might have happened if Reitman, Ramis, Aykroyd, and all the rest came back for at least one more entry back in their prime? What would it have been like if Ayrkoyd got his coveted Ghostbusters III off the ground in the 1990s? This was after all a period stuffed with bonafide high-concept blockbuster sequels, and the old Ghostbusters guard were still putting out projects like Multiplicity, The Man Who Knew Too Little, and Six Days and Seven Nights.

Well, one detailed, 19-page story treatment by Aykroyd gives us a pretty good idea of what that Ghostbusters III might have been like… and why it would’ve been literal hell for the Ghostbusters.

What Fresh Ghostbusters Hell Was This?

Ironically, it was one of the bigger studio comedies of the ‘90s that finally saw Ghostbusters III gain traction at Sony’s Columbia Pictures. While Aykroyd had expressed interest in possibly doing another adventure with Ray Stantz, Peter Venkman, Egon Spengler, and Winston Zeddemore as early as the 1989 press tour for Ghostbusters II, no one else was particularly interested at the time.

Yet after enjoying a small but pivotal role in a Chris Farley starring vehicle, Tommy Boy (1995), Aykroyd became convinced that a third Ghostbusters movie could work, especially if they added Farley to the repertoire. Over the next several years, Aykroyd began developing a third Ghostbusters flick that eventually gained the working subtitle of “Hellbent.” By that point, Aykroyd had brought aboard as co-writer Tom Davis, one of the most popular SNL writers from that sketch comedy series’ 1970s glory days, to help refine the project as it encountered setback after setback going into the mid-2000s.

The most prominent of these setbacks was, of course, Bill Murray’s infamous reluctance to return to the brown jumpsuit and proton pack.  Murray even allegedly sent one of Aykroyd and Davis’ later drafts of the Hellbent script back with a note that said, “No one wants to pay money to see fat, old men chasing ghosts.” While Aykroyd denied that note was ever written, even Murray has admitted to an estranged relationship with Ramis after a contentious production on 1993’s Groundhog Day.

Murray’s refusal to return, as well as that of Sigourney Weaver, and even some hesitancy from Reitman, repeatedly delayed the project until it was eventually mothballed in 2007.

Yet for the purposes of this article, we are less interested in the behind-the-scenes problems which contributed to the demise of Ghostbusters III/Hellbent/whatever else it might have been called than we are in understanding what the movie might have been like if it was produced when Aykroyd first got the inkling to do the film at a moment where the franchise wasn’t ancient, they were not quite Murray’s alleged “fat old men,” and Aykroyd’s first choice to be the next generation of ‘bustin’ was still alive. In other words, we’d like to look back at Aykroyd’s earliest February 1997 treatment when the only potential limitations were with what the material itself could have been.

Dan Aykroyd’s Original Vision for Ghostbusters 3

Dated Feb. 6, 1997, Ayrkoyd’s story treatment for a third Ghostbusters movie is defined by a series of very clever set pieces or visual moments that are interstitially connected by a plot that’s obviously still in early development. The general gist of this Dante-like story is that the Ghostbusters must navigate the various levels of Hell, but instead of it being an inferno circling ever downward, Aykroyd’s vision of everlasting perdition is…. basically Manhattan (or Manhellton) on a bad day.

How the Ghostbusters end up there begins promising enough. In a beat that would have played well during any montage of the undead in the first two Ghostbusters films, the third movie was intended to open after hours at a Yonkers funeral home where a relaxing attendant hears a knock at the door, only to see a woman we saw moments earlier in a state of repose in a coffin. Now she appears in the employee’s doorway in silhouette. The only thing lighting her is the fire from the cigarette she bums off his desk. “Ahhh, that’s good,” she purrs. “Now, I want to go home.”

The subsequent sequences are the most detailed and intriguing ideas in Aykroyd’s treatment: the confines of Hell have apparently filled up so much with the souls of the damned that the dead are rising from their graves. There’s no more room in Hell. Hence a sequence of one mourner throwing the first handful of dirt on the coffin of their beloved in a graveyard… only for the dirt to be thrown right back in their face. Afterward the entire cemetery is described as follows: “Coffins are popping up like corks in a pool and shooting out of the ground like missiles. Caskets are landing around them, splitting apart with the corpses walking out and heading for the road.”

It is in this chaos we get the script’s first fake out as Ecto-1 peels out of the beloved firehouse… only for the three Ghostbusters who emerge looking a lot younger than the crew we knew from ’84. Ghostbusters III would have introduced three new busters: Frank, Nicole, and Dwight. But while Nicole is described to be the only competent one of them (or “pretty and very tough no-nonsense”), the lone one that matters is Frank. Noted to be “a big cute-looking blonde man in his early thirties, very nervous and physically ungainly,” Frank is obviously a role written for Chris Farley. He’s loud, often cowardly despite ghost-chaser being his profession, and seemingly ill-suited for the job. He has it because he’s revealed to be Ray’s nephew.

Still, even at the top of the movie, he gets one of the best deadpan lines when he returns the aforementioned old woman risen from the dead in the funeral home to her grandson. “What about her?” the full-grown descendant demands when Frank inquires about grandma in his front door. “She passed away three days ago!”

“Yeah, that’s the one,” Farley would have garbled. “It seems though sir as if she’s passed back in and she wants to come home… Congratulations.”

All of these early scenes of it raining proverbial cats and dogs in NYC are prelude to the meat of the movie. After Egon and Ray’s hitherto unknown mentor, Professor Wyance, has a ghastly “passing on” moment in the hospital, Ray and Egon deduce that something is wrong with the afterlife, and they need to figure out what… fast. Luckily, they have technology ready to do exactly that!

Indeed, it seems the intervening years between Ghostbusters II and this film, the Ghostbusters’ operation has gotten bigger. Intriguingly, the day-to-day seems to be run by Ernie Hudson’s Winston, who sits a bit like a COO, if not CEO, in suit and tie behind a desk at the firehouse. He has an entire fleet of Ectomobiles to oversee across the five boroughs. It’s clearly the kernel of an idea that would blossom all the way into Winston being a successful billionaire in what became 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Meanwhile Ray is a guest lecturer at universities, and Egon might have spent time working with Professor Wylance at a secret laboratory in Brooklyn.

(The only reference of Murray’s Peter Venkman is that Venkman has sent his colleagues a postcard from Indonesia where he apparently believes he’s secured the rights to a nearby goldmine.)

After Wyance’s attempt to communicate from the afterlife failed while he was on his deathbed in a hospital—in fact he was jumped by demons upon floating into an astral plane—Egon and Ray take Frank and Winston to Wyance’s lab where they will complete the professor’s “Phase Shifter,” which will allow them to shift between realities. (The movie operates on the belief that the afterlife is another plane of existence that occupies the same space as our own.)

Which leads us back to what would have obviously been the movie’s main selling point: the Ghostbusters have gone to Hell… and it looks just like New York.

At this point, the story treatment becomes a lot more thinly sketched, although there are several clever moments, including when the heroes first realize that they’re living in a city of the dead. It’s a slow realization because when they first “phase,” Wyance’s secret lab looks exactly the same. Yet upon attempting to cross the Brooklyn Bridge, they notice there are cars from every era of New York City clogging the traffic to a standstill: taxi cabs from the 1920s and ‘40s, Model Ts from earlier, and even hansom carriages with horses circa the 19th century. “What’s going on in the city today?” one gridlocked cabbie moans. “It must be hell in there.”

Indeed. As the Busters realize this Bridge has Dante’s famed line of “Abandon Hope All Ye Who Enter Here” engraved in wrought iron upon its frame, they see some vehicles spill out into the boiling water below. Later, the overstuffed Staten Island Ferry is revealed to be run by literal demons holding pitchforks who force a surplus of commuters off the ferry and into the river.

This is more or less the same joke for the rest of the story treatment: the daily indignities of living in New York City are heightened to genuinely hellish proportions with all the sight gag ironies that entails. Perhaps most intriguingly in 2024 is how the film ultimately becomes a quest about reaching Lucifer Towers, a monument Ron Lucifer built to himself on the corner of 59th Street and 5th Ave. For those who aren’t familiar with Manhattan geography, that’s right on the southeast corner of Central Park and about three blocks from Trump Tower, the monument Donald Trump built to himself. “Ron” Lucifer, indeed, appears to be a parody of Trump and is furthermore described as looking like “Alec Baldwin.” It would seem decades before SNL, Aykroyd pegged Baldwin to play a parody of Trump… as the Devil incarnate.

When the heroes finally meet Ol’ Nick (or Ron), he’s a “corporate type,” congenial but slyly desperate to expand his empire by stealing the Ghostbusters’ technology so he can open up his hellacious real estate plans in the real world. The Ghostbusters eventually escape in what appears to be a clever sequence of the heroes running around M.C. Esher inspired staircases and C-suite boardrooms in order to flee Lucifer Towers (they also end up in the sub-sub-basement, which turns out to be “Hades” in the classical imagining, complete with hellfire and brimstone). Eventually, the foursome get out and, thanks to Frank giving a speech about human decency to the residents of Manhellton, inspire many of the damned New Yorkers to seek salvation by asking God for forgiveness and going to Heaven… by crossing the George Washington Bridge?!

This part of the story is the most thinly developed, but it obviously mirrors Farley giving a speech on TV about supporting autoworkers in Tommy Boy and concludes with a mass exodus over a river of blood into Heaven. Surely a finished film would’ve made some cracks about the irony of Heaven actually being in New Jersey. In any event, the film ends with the Ghostbusters fighting some giant monsters to open the Gates of Heaven, and Frank deciding he wants to stay after seeing an apparently beautiful angel.

“Frank looks to see an incredibly gorgeous angel figure opening her arms to embrace him… as he turns and runs to hug her, Spengler and [the other Ghostbusters] all activate their phase shifting devices and Frank opens his eyes to find they have all fluxed back to the real life plane and instead of a beautiful angel, he is hugging a fat black female Jersey transit cop.”

The movie ends with the Ghostbusters back in the real-world, Frank having proved sufficient mettle (and buffoonery) to be an official fourth member, and Professor Wyance’s soul saved in Heaven—and inexplicably also born again via reincarnation in the eyes of a Black newborn baby at a nearby hospital.

A Road Paved in Good Intentions

When Ghostbusters II opened in 1989, it was criticized by some for more or less telling the same story: schlubby scientists go (back) into business and save a skeptical and rude New York populace from a spectral invasion. So to its credit, Ghostbusters III in its earliest inception would have inverted the concept. This time the Ghostbusters would have gone into the afterlife (or “afterworld” as it’s described in the script treatment). All the while, the film would find new ways to poke fun at New York City’s excesses and attitude.

So on that level, it deserves credit for taking a risk. However, even in this skeletal form, it left a lot to be desired. Most notably it was already falling into a trap that would bedevil the franchise going forward: it stopped viewing these characters as schlubs and instead bought into their own hype as being veritable superheroes. While the obvious intention is to leave room to fill in the character-based humor later, most of the film seems content on relying on a character pegged for Farley to provide the hapless screw-up humor. Ray and Egon, meanwhile, come off as straight men.

In other words, it sorely missed Murray’s raised eyebrow and acerbic cynicism about the whole thing. It also seemed to rely too heavily on its one joke about New York being a hellhole. So even if the film could have been made at the end of the 1990s, complete with Farley getting to play a character refreshingly dialed down, we’re not sure it would have been anymore satisfying than the three Ghostbusters movies Sony Pictures eventually produced in the next century.

… Alas, though, we’ll never know for sure. Ten months after Aykroyd turned in this detailed outline, Farley died of a drug overdose in December 1997. The film was meticulously reworked after Davis came aboard, and the film finally ran into an issue that continues to haunt all belated “legacy” sequels: the actors and characters aged out of the story they’re trying to tell.

There are several drafts out there of the later, fuller versions of Hellbent, but it honestly reminds us quite a bit of problems in Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Jurassic World Dominion, and a litany of similar projects. The characters should be retired or doing something else, but despite some lip service to that effect (Winston is also a PhD in one draft of Hellbent!), the later scripts struggle at balancing the nostalgia of seeing guys pushing 60 or later doing what they were doing 25 years earlier while also introducing a new generation of heroes. In fact, after the loss of Farley, subsequent versions had a whole new ensemble of important Ghostbusters acting as “the next generation,” but the tone and narrative is uneven with the old standards acting as too prominent supporting players.

(One curious bit, at least, is that they tried to lure Murray back for a cameo as a ghost after Venkman apparently fell down an elevator shaft while trying to use a love potion.)

It’s probably for the best that we didn’t get what Ghostbusters III was turning into before Sony finally pulled the plug altogether in 2007. Still, part of me wonders what might have been if Aykroyd’s “Ghostbusters Go to Hell” had been made at the end of the ‘90s. It was the same period where movies like Men in Black and Wild Wild West could become blockbusters, and Bill Murray hadn’t quite transitioned to full prestige mode thanks to Wes Anderson and Sofia Coppola (he appeared in Rushmore in 1998, but also Wild Things). Perhaps Murray could have been lured back. If so, could he and a still-living Farley turn this trip to hell into comedy heaven?

Perhaps. Or perhaps Ghostbusters remains lightning that was bottled in 1984, and in a vintage that can never be duplicated.

While streaming has made it easier to binge our favorite shows and movies all in one place, it also means that titles we’ve loved for years can become inaccessible at a moment’s notice. The corporations that own Netflix, Max, Hulu, and others now have the ability to truncate their catalogs in an attempt to present a leaner library and save costs, often at the expense of series and films that consumers love.

Cartoon Network became the latest victim of this phenomenon recently as fans of the iconic brand can no longer visit the cable channel’s website, which has been a fixture of the web since the late 1990s. The URL cartoonnetwork.com now redirects to Max’s website. It leaves the future of the shows from Cartoon Network in question, especially because there is no clarity on what will remain on Max and what will be lost to faint millennial memories.

Variety says a spokesperson for Cartoon Network told them, “We are focusing on the Cartoon Network shows and social media where we find consumers are the most engaged and there is a meaningful potential for growth.” Leaving it up to Warner Bros. Discovery to gauge audience interest and consolidate Cartoon Network’s canon to their discretion could leave a lot of great shows on the outside looking in.

Some of the Cartoon Network series that are available right now on Max include The Amazing World of Gumball, Regular Show, Courage the Cowardly Dog, The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy, Ed, Edd, n Eddy, Total Drama Island, and Teen Titans. While this remains a good selection with plenty of variety, including new and old hits alike, the move signals an ominous tone for Cartoon Network’s worth as a singular entity. Anything can be taken down at any time on Max.

Look at how the once popular drama Westworld is no longer on the streamer, a move that forces fans to buy the series on disc or watch on Amazon Prime Video for an extra charge. It would once have been unimaginable to remove an HBO product from the premium cable channel’s archives, but Warner Bros. has been increasingly cutthroat towards brand value and its ties to shows for several years now.

Max has gradually shifted its identity since it launched in 2020. Originally called HBO Max, the streamer was recognizable mainly as the place to enjoy HBO’s legendary dramas and comedies. With the rebrand into Max in 2023, this was the first step Warner Bros. took to dilute the marketing power of the HBO brand on the streamer. Fans have to scroll through a list titled “Brand Spotlight” to know everything Max has to offer. Cable channels like TLC, Food Network, HGTV, and Adult Swim are under this umbrella with Cartoon Network, but they don’t have the same singularity or branding worth they did years ago.

Warner Bros. reported it lost over $9 billion recently in the world of cable television. It’s well-known that viewers are switching over to streaming services and ignoring cable channels they used to watch daily. But this transition puts old-school viewing habits and the shows they produce at risk for audiences who are still devoted to that legacy. Companies like Warner Bros. treat their shows like chips in the center of a poker table. They are trying to shift their priorities and reorient their focus for a financial benefit, especially as they compete neck and neck with television titans such as Netflix and Disney. This is where the business side of entertainment can overshadow the magic of the storytelling onscreen.

When dealing with cartoons that people grew up watching and want to share with their own kids in adulthood, the drift away from the Cartoon Network brand in favor of the more general “Max” jeopardizes the aura and legacy of the series. Fans of the cable channel instantly associate specific qualities and even iconic lines with the cartoons that are on the network. “Stupid dog! You make me look bad!” is distinct from “I’m ready! I’m ready!” Any animation lover immediately is transported to memories of Courage the Cowardly Dog and SpongeBob SquarePants when hearing those sayings, but it’s the juxtaposition of the memories that makes them special. Cartoon Network is different from Nickelodeon, both in content and in vibes. Both of these channels elicit unique feelings and responses from audiences. As streaming forces everything into one opaque pool of accessibility, it blurs the lines between those different flavors, and the essence of each network’s stuff starts to leak out.

As more mergers happen and cable TV continues its slow demise, it’s vital to keep kids’ shows from the past, present, and future alive. The storylines, characters, and colorful worlds created by Cartoon Network are timeless, even if the conduit for immersing yourself in them is not. Hopefully, the big bosses upstairs understand this before scrubbing someone’s favorite cartoon from Max on a random Tuesday in January.

It sometimes feels odd to argue for the Super Nintendo in the great SNES vs. Sega Genesis debate. After all, the SNES did win that war in terms of sales, is widely considered to be one of the greatest consoles ever made, and furthered the cause of an empire that still rules over the industry to this day. You’re not exactly standing up for the little guy when you go to bat for the Super Nintendo.

Yet, it’s important to take a closer look at the things that the SNES did better than the Genesis. Not so the console to enjoy another victory lap, mind you, but rather as a way to appreciate the things that made it unique. As we celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Sega Genesis and the legendary console war it kicked off, we also celebrate the ways those consoles offered unique, distinct experiences that changed gaming forever. However, if you want to see how the other half lived, be sure to check out Chris Freiberg’s breakdown of the reasons why the Genesis was better than the SNES.

Donkey Kong Country SNES

Revolutionary Graphics

Sega’s “Blast Processing” claims may have been a clever bit of marketing, but there was certainly some truth in the buzzwords. The Sega Genesis boasted a faster overall processor that often allowed it to deliver those exceptional arcade ports with their arcade accurate speed. In most other technical respects, though, the Super Nintendo was the objectively superior system.

While that enhanced power was often obvious in the SNES’ generally brighter and more colorful visuals, the gap between the two consoles widened in more significant ways during the early-to-mid ‘90s. Games like Donkey Kong Country became SNES sellers largely by virtue of their jaw-dropping graphics. Try as they might, Sega could never quite get the Genesis to replicate that visual style or more advanced gameplay-altering visual tricks like Mode 7 scaling. Unfortunately for Sega, so much of the Genesis’ early marketing was built around a power advantage that they just couldn’t maintain in the long run.

FF 6 opera

Richer and More Dynamic Sound Design

I was originally going to lump this point in with the SNES’ graphical advantages, but the console’s audio advantages over the Sega Genesis were just as impactful in the long run.

Contrary to popular belief, the Sega Genesis’ audio hardware was not significantly inferior to the SNES’ hardware. It’s just that the Sega console relied on very arcade-like sound design that had to be utilized in a more specific way. While that approach offered immediate advantages over the NES, the SNES’ more advanced audio engineering gave way to sweeping orchestral-style scores the Genesis struggled to replicate. To be clear, some Genesis games boast incredible soundtracks. It’s just that the console’s inherent synth style proved to be an asset for some, a detriment to many others, and, ultimately, fundamentally limited compared to what the SNES often offered.

Super Mario World

The Nintendo Advantage

As I put this article together, I kept finding myself coming back to variations of the same basic – yet significant – point. The Super Nintendo had Nintendo games, and the Sega Genesis did not.

From the earliest days of the NES, Nintendo’s greatest advantage has been Nintendo. Like no other console manufacturer before them (and few after), they based much of their hardware’s value on the promise that those devices would be home to some of the greatest exclusive games in the world. It’s one of the biggest reasons why people still buy Nintendo consoles.

Sega deserves all the love in the world for its innovative first-party output that forced Nintendo to step up its game. But when you get right down to it, they simply were never able to match Nintendo’s ability to deliver so many incredible titles across such a wide variety of genres and franchises. I mean, the SNES launched with one of the greatest games ever made (Super Mario World) as a free pack-in title. Sega’s backs were always against the wall to some degree.

Super Castlevania 4

Upgraded NES Titles and Franchise Evolutions

While the Genesis was famously the SNES’ greatest console competition, the Genesis’ release date initially made it an NES competitor. The Genesis wasn’t Sega’s first home console, but it was the one that made them undeniable players in the revitalized industry.

That’s all well and good, but I think we sometimes underestimate how much of an advantage the success of the NES was for the SNES. With the NES, Nintendo established not just a global market for their brand but a library of titles and partner studios whose initial SNES offerings were often upgraded versions of what they had previously developed for the NES. Indeed, the whole “Super” tag was often applied to games that were essentially remakes of NES titles (most notably, Super Castlevania IV and Super Metroid). Many of the world’s biggest developers were able to use the NES to test concepts that they would later perfect on the SNES.

Chrono Trigger

Some of the Best Console RPGs Ever Made

Despite what the popular narrative suggests, the Sega Genesis did have some really good RPGs. It’s just that comparing the Genesis RPG library to the SNES RPG library instantly reveals one of the most significant genre gaps in the history of the console wars.

To be fair, Sega would have had to sell their soul to corporate Satan (AKA, the regular Devil) just to find a studio that could keep up with Square’s RPG output alone. More importantly, many of those RPGs quickly became the kind of console-selling epics that showcased so many of the things that the SNES could technically do better than the Genesis. That’s to say nothing of their widely-regarded status as some of the greatest games ever made. Not to rub salt in the wound, but many of the lesser and overlooked SNES RPGs would have instantly become some of the Genesis’ greatest genre offerings.

Kirby SNES

A Deeper (and Generally Better) Platformer Libary

While I certainly side with Mario in the great Mario vs. Sonic debate without any hesitation in my heart, you have to remember those were two platformer franchises at the forefront of a much larger war for relevance in the increasingly popular genre. It was a war that the SNES’ lineup ultimately won.

Granted, its victory can largely be attributed to the aforementioned contributions of Nintendo and those legacy NES studios (Capcom, Konami, Rare, etc.). But at a time when Sega turned having a viable Mario competitor into a big deal, it’s easy to forget that some of the biggest and best Super Mario competitors came from within the Nintendo ecosystem.

SNES controller

The SNES Controller’s Shoulder Buttons

I can’t argue with my esteemed colleague who suggests that the Genesis’ six-button controller often made it the superior option (especially for the genres that the Genesis generally excelled at). However, the SNES controller had one considerable advantage that is hard to live without to this day: shoulder buttons.

Those two buttons atop the SNES’ controller were literal game changers. They allowed you to easily access menus in slower games and enable entirely new input options in faster, arcade-like games all without having to make serious alterations to your natural hand placement. There are reasons why variations of the shoulder button have become the industry standard. For that matter, there are reasons why most retro handheld devices utilize shoulder buttons that even Genesis games benefit from.

Nintendo Power

Nintendo Power and Nintendo Fan Culture

Hey, I hear you. Singling out Nintendo Power probably seems like a trivial point to make in favor of a console that had a lot going for it in the first place. For that matter, Nintendo Power started during the NES era, and Sega did technically have a magazine of their own called Sega Visions.

But take a look at the average issue of Sega Visions vs. the average issue of Nintendo Power and tell me which one was more impressive. At a time when gaming culture was growing, Nintendo often had its finger on the pulse of that culture in ways that Sega struggled to keep up with. Nintendo Power is just one of the more notable ways they not only cultivated but eventually capitalized on their growing fanbase outside of games in ways that Sega sometimes struggled to do. From giveaways and reveals to the artwork of the issues, Nintendo Power became a communal hub for a fandom that is stronger than ever.

Super Game Boy

The Super Game Boy

While the Sega Genesis undeniably offered more accessories (and generally more ambitious accessories) no Sega Genesis accessory matched the drawing power of the Super Game Boy. That deceptively simple plug-in device that allowed you to play enhanced versions of your Game Boy games on your TV became the arguable necessity that so many other peripherals of that era often were not.

Even if Sega had released a comparable device, it probably wouldn’t have mattered. Not only was the Super Game Boy pretty much perfectly designed, but, quite frankly, a device that supported Game Boy games was always going to be more appealing because the Game Boy was a far superior device to every other handheld at that time. This device expanded the size of the SNES’ library while increasing the value of a handheld many fans probably owned anyway. In many ways, it was the kind of accessory that Sega kept trying and failing to make during their many attempts to prolong the Genesis’ lifespan via add-ons.

Harvest Moon

Twice As Many Games In a Library Full of Hidden Gems

While discussions about the quality of SNES vs. Genesis games will always be subjective on some level, the SNES objectively won the quantity war. Over 1700 games were released for the SNES in all regions compared to just under 900 games that made their way to the Genesis.

No, you’ll never be able to play them all (or at least you shouldn’t try). But that number highlights the sheer depth of the SNES library as well as the ways that the console offered a consistent platform for creative growth over its impressive run. Sega offered developers slightly more freedom on paper, but their constant attempts to tweak the Genesis hardware led to instability that is consistent with the overall decline in Genesis software. There’s a seemingly infinite supply of great SNES games you’ve never played (or even heard of), and many of them represent the kind of uniquely console-based design style that the SNES allowed developers to explore outside of the traditional arcade space.

The console wars are not what they used to be. Nowadays, there’s little difference in terms of features and performance between the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 (though Nintendo kind of does its own thing with the Switch). There aren’t even many console exclusives anymore as both Sony and Microsoft put most of their titles on PC, and Xbox has begun porting some of their first-party games to other platforms.

But in the ‘90s, things were very different. There were endless debates on playgrounds and early message boards about whether the Sega Genesis or Super Nintendo was the superior console. And the same titles could look and play completely differently depending on your console of choice. But which console really was better? Well, in celebration of the Sega Genesis’ 35th anniversary, here are some things the Genesis just plain did better than the SNES. And if you want a look at how things were on the other side of the battlefield, here is Matthew Byrd’s look at the things the Super Nintendo did better than the Sega Genesis.

Genesis Marketing

Marketing

In the early ‘90s, Nintendo controlled more than 90 percent of the console market by some estimates. Yet, by the middle of the decade, Sega had cut that share down to only 65 percent. The secret was incredibly aggressive marketing. Nintendo had become synonymous with consoles thanks to the NES and its strong library, but after a few years of dominance, Sega executives found that Nintendo really just appealed to younger children. Teens often wouldn’t even admit to owning a Nintendo console.

So, Sega went to work courting these gamers, with the famous “Genesis does what Nintendon’t” campaign. They made Sonic the Hedgehog their “cool” mascot who had a bit of an edge to him. And they claimed the Genesis could perform better due to “blast processing,” which wasn’t really a thing the Genesis could even do, but damn if it didn’t sound awesome. The irony of all this though is that while it helped the Genesis outsell the SNES for four consecutive Christmas seasons in the U.S., Sega’s Japanese headquarters strongly disliked this approach, which only exacerbated the infighting at the company that eventually led Sega to exit the hardware business altogether.

Genesis controller

A Better Six-Button Controller

The Genesis launched with a controller that only had three face buttons. It was fine for many early, simple games, but as the library expanded, and in particular added more fighting games like Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat, three buttons just weren’t going to cut it anymore. The six-button pad easily solved this problem, and it was also really comfortable for extended play sessions (more so than the SNES pad at least).

In fact, the Genesis controller was so good that when it was time to launch its ill-fated successor, the Saturn, Sega really just tweaked the design a little. No, it wasn’t great for 3D games at that point, but it’s still another reason why the Saturn is still so beloved for its arcade ports and library of 2D classics.

NHL '94

Better Sports Games

Many older gamers will champion the SNES because of its superior color palette and sound (plus, the benefit of some fancy in-cartridge chips that came later in the lifecycle). But at the end of the day, the Genesis just had a faster processor, and that made all the difference in football and basketball games that required quickly scrolling down the field or court. Oh, and those extra controller buttons also came in handy here.

This was a golden era for sports fans where games actually did see substantial updates from year to year, and there were no microtransactions to be found. Whether it was Madden, NBA Live, or the legendary NHL ’94, sports games just played better on the Genesis than the SNES, which was one of the biggest reasons the console sold so well in the United States.

Mortal Kombat Genesis

Better Fighting Games

The Genesis port of the first Mortal Kombat is infamously considered superior to the SNES version due to its lack of censorship. On the SNES, Nintendo’s emphasis on family-friendly policies at the time required blood in the game to be changed to white sweat, and most fatalities had to be considerably toned down. Unsurprisingly, it sold much worse than the Genesis version since the gore was the game’s biggest selling point.

Beyond that, the fighting genre is another area where the six-button controller truly shined, allowing for a much better experience when playing Street Fighter II (which also featured superior sound over the SNES version). The Genesis even managed to build up a small, but respectable library of exclusive fighters with the likes of Eternal Champions, King of the Monsters 2, and a surprisingly great 32X port of Virtua Fighter.

SHMUPS Genesis

The Best Shoot ‘em Ups

If there was one genre where the Genesis absolutely dominated the SNES, it was shoot ‘em ups. The library alone still stands up as the greatest on any console, with classics like M.U.S.H.A., Gley Lancer, and Lightening Force: Quest for the Darkstar. If I’m being generous, I’d add Gunstar Heroes and Alien Soldier into the mix, even if they don’t quite meet the classic definition of a shoot ‘em up.

The point is, all of these games hold up incredibly well, and it’s because the Genesis’ faster processor was the perfect match for this style of gameplay, as it excelled in rendering fast scrolling levels and large, animated sprites. Shoot ‘em ups are still among the best-looking titles on the Genesis.

Golden Axe Genesis

Excellent Arcade Game Ports

Though Nintendo first made a name for itself in the arcades, it had almost entirely turned its focus to console gaming by the late ‘80s. On the other hand, Sega doubled down on its arcade roots, putting out plenty of top-tier coin-op units well into the late ‘90s. That meant the Genesis was built with arcade ports in mind. Right from the get-go, the Genesis had a top-tier library of arcade games like Golden Axe, Alien Storm, and Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker (which is a surprisingly fun game, all controversy aside). If you were a fan of arcade games, Genesis was really the best option, as most third-party arcade games at least came to both consoles.

These arcade ports also gave Sega the opportunity to push the Genesis to its absolute limits. The Genesis version of Virtua Racing shipped with an extra chip that rendered the game in full 3D, and it still stands out as one of the most impressive achievements in programming ever. Then again, Sega also attempted a 2D demake of Virtua Fighter 2 for the Genesis that’s best forgotten, though Sega regularly continues to bundle it in various compilations for some reason.

Splatterhouse Genesis

More Mature Titles

Sega didn’t give developers carte blanche to put anything they wanted in games, but as Mortal Kombat illustrated, the company was much more open to violent and mature content in games than Nintendo was at the start of the 16-bit generation. That meant that Sega was the exclusive home of two games in the horror beat ‘em up series Splatterhouse, and the infamous Sega CD game Night Trap, an FMV game about scantily clad teen girls being attacked by vampires that contributed to the creation of the ESRB.

The irony is that when it came to overtly sexual content, and games featuring religious imagery, Sega actually required a lot of the same edits Nintendo did, but allowing a few gratuitously violent games on the console helped enhance the image among gamers that the Genesis was a console for adults.

Aladdin Genesis

Better Versions of Games (Sometimes, At Least)

This advantage admittedly comes with some asterisks, but it happened enough to be worthy of inclusion. In the ‘90s, because the Genesis and the SNES had such drastically different architectures, it wasn’t uncommon for developers to just make two different games for each console while using the same name instead of trying to achieve parity.

Among the most notable beneficiaries of this policy were Disney’s Aladdin, which featured actual sword-based combat and much smoother animation not seen in the SNES version, and Jurassic Park, which let you play as a raptor for certation levels, while SNES players were stuck as humans for the entire game. Then there’s Shadowrun, one of the very best RPGs on the Genesis. Meanwhile, the SNES version is a completely different game that’s nowhere near as good

Sega Channel Gensis

Forward-Thinking Innovation

Looking back at the Genesis now, it’s easy to see the beginnings of many modern console trends. In 1994, the company launched Sega Channel: a service that let gamers access up to 50 Genesis games through a cable provider for around $15 a month. It was essentially the precursor to Game Pass and downloadable gaming. And while Nintendo offered a similar service, Satallaview, that never came stateside.

Then there were the add-ons, the Sega CD and the 32X. While ultimately divisive peripherals that never sold well, they were both attempts at boosting the power of an aging console without forcing gamers to upgrade to a next-generation machine. That’s something Sony and Microsoft would later pursue with console like the PS4 Pro and the Xbox One X. Then there was the Sega Nomad: an official, full-on portable Genesis that Sega hoped would give the console a second life as it transitioned to supporting the Saturn. It didn’t work out, but Nintendo would later find massive success merging their portable and home console businesses into one unit with the Switch. It’s really interesting to think about where Sega would be in the video game business now if it had just gotten the timing and execution right on these ideas.

Batman and Robin

Better Partnerships with Publishers and Developers

Because Nintendo was so dominant in the video game industry in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, the company had immense power to not only dictate the content of games on its consoles but also determine how many games a publisher could release in a given year. From the start, Sega was more open to new, more mature titles on its console, but it was also more flexible about other things as well.

It did take EA reverse engineering the Genesis, but that ultimately led to getting much better publishing terms out of Sega. That in turn led to the release of some of the very best titles on the console. Couple that with Sega being much more accessible to the gaming media than Nintendo, and it’s easy to see why the Genesis was able to become such a massive success even though Nintendo had a huge head start in the marketplace.

    Are Real Money Casino Apps Safe?

    Yes, real-money casino apps are safe as long as you stick to licensed and regulated online casinos like Slots Of Vegas and Ignition. These casino apps pay real money and adhere to strict regulatory compliance requirements.

    How Can You Tell if a Real Money Casino App is Legit?

    There are several very specific things you can do when looking into an online casino app for legitimacy. All the best casino apps have checked the following criteria.

    • Software and Game Fairness Verification: A legitimate casino app ensures its real money casino games are fair and outcomes are random. This is often verified by third-party organizations like eCOGRA (eCommerce Online Gaming Regulation and Assurance) or iTech Labs, which test the Random Number Generator (RNG) and other aspects of the gaming software.
    • Look at the Game Providers: Check which gaming software providers the best mobile casinos have. Legit mobile casinos usually partner with reputable and well-known providers of mobile games like NetEnt, Microgaming, or Playtech. These providers have their reputation to consider and typically don’t allow their mobile games to be featured on dubious platforms.
    • Look for Proper Licensing: Legitimate real-money casino apps are licensed by gaming authorities. For example, in the UK, this would be the UK Gambling Commission, while in Malta, it’s the Malta Gaming Authority. These licenses are not just fancy stickers on their website; they prove the casino is subject to regulation and oversight.

    Mobile Casino Games with Best Payouts

    High RTP rates close to 100% are more favorable to the player, meaning there’s a smaller house edge and a greater chance of winning over the long haul. Let’s dive into the highest-paying options at online gambling apps, shall we?

    Slots

    Slot machines, or online pokies, can vary widely, with RTP rates ranging from 90% to 97%. However, some casino slot apps offer even higher RTPs.

    For example, “Book of 99” by Relax Gaming boasts a 99% RTP, one of the highest available for slots. Remember, though, while higher RTP slots offer better long-term returns, they don’t guarantee wins in the short term.

    Blackjack

    The RTP rate for blackjack at online gambling apps can soar up to 99.5%, depending on the rules of the game and your use of basic strategy.

    This incredibly high RTP is why skilled players flock to the blackjack tables. Each decision you make impacts the game, making it one of the few where you can actively alter your odds of winning.

    Roulette

    The RTP differs significantly between American and European Roulette due to the extra double zero (’00’) in the American version.

    European Roulette offers an RTP of 97.3%, while American Roulette drops to 94.74%. Betting on red/black or even/odd in European Roulette gives you almost a 50% chance of doubling your money.

    If these games don’t cut it for you, our top online bingo sites might.

    What Banking Methods Can You Use at Real Money Online Casino Apps?

    Here’s a rundown of the most popular payment options at most casino apps that pay real money.

    • Credit and Debit Cards: Cards like Visa and MasterCard are a staple. They’re widely accepted, making deposits as easy as any other online purchase. The potential hiccup? Some banks might block transactions with real money mobile casinos.
    • E-Wallets: PayPal, Skrill, Neteller, and similar services provide fast transactions. They’re great for deposits and withdrawals, usually completed within 24 hours. Plus, they offer an extra layer of security by keeping your bank details separate from the casino.
    • Cryptocurrencies: Digital crypto coins like Bitcoin and Ethereum offer a modern approach with anonymity, security, and speedy transactions. The downside is the potential for unpredictable value fluctuations, adding a layer of risk to your transactions.

    What is the Best Currency to Gamble With?

    The best currency to gamble with at real-money casino apps is the US Dollar (USD) because its widespread acceptance in online mobile casinos worldwide offers a broad range of gambling platforms without the need for currency conversion.

    Why Is Slots Of Vegas the Best Casino App?

    Let’s briefly discuss what makes Slots Of Vegas the No. 1 casino app in the gambling industry. We’ll keep it short and sweet!

    • Premium RTG Games: This casino app is home to a hefty collection of more than 250 games by Realtime Gaming (RTG). You’ve got everything from old-school slots and classic table games to big-win progressive jackpots, making for a full and fun gaming experience.
    • Fast Payouts: Slots Of Vegas supports crypto and processes all Bitcoin withdrawals almost instantly with no extra fees.
    • Generous Welcome Deal: When you pick Slots of Vegas for your playtime, they welcome you with open arms and a big bonus – up to $2,500 plus 50 extra spins on the house. It’s the perfect way to kickstart your time at the casino app.

    Why Should I Use Real Money Casino Apps?

    When you put online casinos against land-based casinos like the BetMGM Casino or DraftKings Casino, the benefits of online gambling become apparent pretty much instantly.

    • Mobile-Only Perks: Consider a casino app that offers 10 free spins exclusively when you log in from a mobile device or mobile players getting priority in joining live dealer games during peak hours.
    • Gesture-Based Gaming: Mobile gambling isn’t just tapping on a screen; it’s about engaging with your games in a more intuitive way. Swipe to spin roulette wheels, tap to stop slot reels, or tilt your device to peek at cards in blackjack.
    • Biometric Security: When you’re handling real money, security is paramount. A mobile casino app will leverage your phone’s built-in biometric features, like fingerprint and facial recognition, for secure logins and transactions.

    These same features make up the best online casinos in Canada. You need to look for these factors when choosing the right real money casino app for you.

    Partiamo, dunque, alla scoperta dei migliori siti di slot online.

    Casinò con le migliori slot online in Italia (2024)

    1. SNAI Casino – miglior sito di slot online in Italia

    Pro:

    • Subito 15€ gratis;
    • Welcome bonus primo deposito, fino a 1.000€;
    • Circa 1.500 giochi in catalogo;
    • Requisiti di gioco bassi;
    • Layout grafico moderno;
    • Licenza ADM (ex AAMS) n. 15215.

    Contro:

    • Casinò live da migliorare;
    • Niente demo dei giochi.

    Al primo posto, lo abbiamo già detto, c’è SNAI, probabilmente il più importante casinò online AAMS, con anche tante sale scommesse nel territorio italiano.

    Lo abbiamo selezionato come migliore sito slot perché propone un catalogo di giochi disponibili davvero di qualità ed un bonus di benvenuto molto ricco.

    Palinsesto di slot online: 4.9/5

    Il catalogo di giochi di slot proposto da SNAI è davvero di alta qualità, dal momento che propone circa 1.500 titoli di pregevole fattura.

    Si tratta di prodotti di grandi software developer, come Greentube, NetEnt e Play’n GO, ovvero alcuni dei migliori sviluppatori nel mondo del gioco online.

    Così, potrai divertirti con giochi come la saga di Book of Ra Deluxe, e quella di Age of the Gods, titoli come Gonzo’s Quest, Book of Dead ed il suo seguito Legacy of Dead.

    Avrai a disposizione anche tante slot con jackpot, diversi titoli in esclusiva ed instant games, ovvero quei giochi a vincita istantanea.

    Purtroppo, non è presente la demo dei prodotti, per cui dovrai giocare alle slot online con soldi veri.

    Bonus di benvenuto slot: 4.9/5

    Tale casinò online propone un welcome bonus slot abbastanza succoso, che prevede:

    • 5€ senza deposito per le scommesse sportive;
    • 5€ per titoli Playtech, dopo aver convalidato il tuo accont, al primo spin in un gioco della software house Playtech,
    • 5€ per le slot della software house italiana Capecod.

    Inoltre, avrai anche il 100% fino a 1.000€ sul tuo primo deposito. Questa cifra promozionale ha un requisito di puntata basso di 20x.

    Migliori slot in catalogo: 4.9/5

    A nostro parere, le top slot presenti nel catalogo di SNAI sono Book of Ra Deluxe e Starburst.

    Si tratta di titoli molto popolari, con tante linee di pagamento, entrambe con una classica griglia 5×3, ovvero con 5 rulli e 3 righe.

    Non sono slot con jackpot, ma presentano comunque degli ottimi RTP (ritorno al giocatore), e la loro volatilità è alta per Book of Ra Deluxe, e bassa per Starburst.

    Metodi di pagamento: 4.5/5

    Qualora volessi movimentare il tuo conto gioco, potrai farlo con:

    • Carta di credito o prepagata Visa, Mastercard e Postepay;
    • PayPal, Skrill, Neteller;
    • Ricarica SNAI card;
    • Ricarica Snaipay;
    • Bonifici bancari.

    Potrai depositare un minimo di 5€, se lo fai con Snaipay, ed il prelievo ha lo stesso limite inferiore.

    L’accredito dei prelievi arriverà in un tempo differente, a seconda dello strumento scelto, da 24 ore lavorative (con eWallet), fino a 7 giorni (bonifico).

    Valutazione finale: 4.9/5

    >> Prendi subito il bonus da 1.000€ (SNAI)

    2. Jackpot City – Migliori software developer tra i casinò con slot

    Pro:

    • Bonus benvenuto fino a 1.200€ e 120 free spin;
    • 50 giri gratis alla convalida;
    • Circa 1.000 giochi;
    • Grande selezione slot Megaways;
    • Migliori software developer nel mercato;
    • Licenza ADM n. 15243.

    Contro:

    • Giochi da tavolo da migliorare;
    • Layout troppo scuro.

    Medaglia d’argento per Jackpot City, uno degli ultimi casinò online ad entrare nel mercato del gioco online italiano.

    Si classifica così in alto per via di un palinsesto fatto interamente dalle migliori software house al mondo.

    Palinsesto di slot online: 4.8/5

    Nel palinsesto di Jackpot City trovano posto i prodotti dei migliori software provider, tra cui NetEnt, Greentube, Play’n GO, Evolution Gaming e diversi altri.

    Infatti, potrai divertirti con le top slot nel mercato, con RTP alti, volatilità diverse e griglie di tutti i tipi. La lista consta di 1.000 titoli in totale, tutti di alta qualità.

    Tra questi, potrai scegliere, ad esempio, Rise of Olympus, la serie di Big Bass Bonanza, Legacy of Dead e moltissimi altri.

    Non c’è una lista separata per le slot con jackpot, ma sono disseminate nella pagina principale, ove potrai scegliere tra differenti temi, come tutte le slot a tema avventura e quelle a tema Egitto.

    Bonus di benvenuto slot: 4.8/5

    Se vorrai iscriverti a tale casinò online con slot, potrai avere:

    Dopo aver verificato il tuo conto di gioco, potrai ottenere altri 50 free spins gratis.

    Migliori slot in catalogo: 4.8/5

    Oltre alle slot citate nel primo paragrafo sul palinsesto, tra le pagine di Jackpot City potrai divertirti con Book of Dead e Blood Suckers.

    La prima è una slot a tema Egitto, principale competitor di Book of Ra, e presenta circa le stesse caratteristiche, con un design completamente diverso.

    Blood Suckers è invece una slot a tema horror, su 4 vampiri famosi, tra cui Nosferatu e Dracula, e rientra a pieno titolo tra le slot ad alto ritorno al giocatore (RTP).

    Metodi di pagamento: 4.7/5

    I metodi di pagamento accettati in questo casinò online sono:

    • Visa, Mastercard e Postepay
    • Paypal, Skrill e Neteller
    • Paysafecard, OnShop
    • Bonifici bancari

    Potrai depositare un minimo di 10€, stessa cifra del prelievo minimo.

    L’accredito delle somme prelevate avverrà in un tempo diverso a seconda della metodologia scelta, ma dovrebbe arrivare in 1-3 giorni lavorativi, dopo l’approvazione del prelievo.

    Valutazione finale: 4.8/5

    >> Ottieni ora il bonus da 1.200€ (Jackpot City)

    3. Gioco Digitale – Migliori giochi slot online nel palinsesto

    Pro:

    • Bonus 100% fino a 1.000€;
    • Anche 500 free spin;
    • 5€ extra per il bingo;
    • Ottima selezione slot machine nuove;
    • 1.300+ giochi in catalogo;
    • LIcenza ADM n. 15028.

    Contro:

    • Offerte aggiuntive esigue;
    • Pochi giochi da tavolo.

    Chiude il nostro podio Gioco Digitale, un sito di slot italiano, lanciato nel 2007, dapprima nato per il poker online, e che poi ha ampliato la sua offerta.

    Si aggiudica la medaglia di bronzo perché presenta il miglior palinsesto, nella sua totalità, fatto da slot di primo piano, slot con jackpot, ma anche giochi di carte, e giochi da casinò.

    Palinsesto di slot online: 4.9/5

    Nel catalogo di Gioco Digitale ci sono circa 1.300 giochi disponibili per i giocatori in totale, la maggior parte dei quali è fatta di slot machine.

    Troverai i più importanti titoli del mercato, come le slot NetEnt, ed i giochi da casinò sviluppati da Pragmatic Play, Evolution Gaming, Playtech e molti altri.

    Si tratta di prodotti di alta qualità, con un design grafico davvero interessante ed un sonoro accurato, popolarissimi tra i giocatori di tutto il mondo.

    Avrai a disposizione anche tante slot con jackpot elevatissimi, slot a tema, tavoli da gioco, casinò live e molto altro.

    Bonus di benvenuto slot: 4.7/5

    Tutti coloro che vorranno iscriversi a Gioco Digitale avranno un bonus di benvenuto casinò davvero interessante, che prevede:

    Dei 500 free spin, 200 si ottengono dopo il deposito, e puoi usarli sulle top slot machine Book of Ra Deluxe e Legacy of Dead.

    Il resto lo riceverai in parti uguali a 3, 6 e 9 giorni dal primo deposito.

    Le potenziali vincite dei free spin hanno un requisito di puntata di 30x.

    Migliori slot in catalogo: 4.7/5

    Il catalogo è davvero di grande qualità, abbiamo detto, e la punta di diamante è sicuramente rappresentata dalle slot Gonzo’s Quest ed Extra Chilli.

    Sono 2 titoli abbastanza diversi. Infatti, Gonzo’s Quest è una slot a tema avventura, il protagonista è un conquistador spagnolo alla ricerca di El Dorado.

    Extra Chilli Megaways, invece, pur essendo comunque ambientata nel Centro America, ha una trama diversa. Ci porta, difatti, in Messico, per la precisione, durante una festa a base di chili.

    Il sistema Megaways, targato Big Time Gaming, consente di arrivare fino a più di 100.000 linee di pagamento, offrendo un’esperienza esaltante e divertente.

    Metodi di pagamento: 4.7/5

    Per ricaricare il tuo conto gioco, o ritirare soldi da esso, su questo casinò online puoi scegliere tra:

    • Carte di credito/debito Visa, Mastercard e Maestro
    • Bonifici
    • PayPal, Skrill
    • Postepay
    • MuchBetter
    • Paysafecard

    Il deposito minimo ed il prelievo minimo ammontano entrambi a 10€.

    Il tempo di accredito varia a seconda dello strumento finanziario scelto, ma non dovrebbe prendere più di 3-5 giorni lavorativi.

    Valutazione finale: 4.7/5

    >> Prendi qui i 1.000€ i bonus (Gioco Digitale)

    4. Spin Palace – bonus di benvenuto casinò al top tra le piattaforme di slot

    Pro:

    • Welcome bonus 100% fino a 3.000€;
    • Bonus ricarica weekend fino a 200€;
    • 50 free spin al giorno per 7 giorni;
    • Più di 1.000 giochi disponibili;
    • Ottime slot con jackpot;
    • Licenza ADM n. 15243.

    Contro:

    • Poche software house;
    • Nessuna promo aggiuntiva.

    SpinPalace è una new entry nel mercato italiano, autorizzato ad operare con la licenza ADM che autorizza anche Jackpot City, casinò al secondo posto secondo noi.

    Lo abbiamo selezionato come quarto classificato perché mette in campo il miglior welcome bonus casinò tra le piattaforme di scommesse prese in considerazione.

    Palinsesto di slot online: 4.6/5

    Il catalogo di Spin Palace mette in campo una buona varietà di slot machine, anche se la quantità raggiunge a fatica i 1.000 titoli.

    Troverai, ad ogni modo, i prodotti delle più importanti case di sviluppo, come Greentube, NetEnt, Play’n GO ed Evolution.

    Nella pagina dei giochi di slot potrai scegliere tra i diversi temi, con appositi filtri. Anche se manca il filtro per le slot con jackpot, un piccolo punto di favore lo segnala la presenza della versione demo di ogni gioco.

    La varietà di giochi disponibili per ogni giocatore mette in campo, ad esempio, titoli come Gates of Olympus, Immortal Romance e The Dog House.

    Bonus di benvenuto slot: 4.9/5

    Con un nuovo conto gioco su Spin Palace avrai diritto a ricevere il miglior welcome bonus tra le piattaforme che stiamo recensendo.

    Infatti, avrai il 100% del primo deposito fino a 3.000€. In più, quando verifichi la tua identità avrai anche 50 free spin, da usare sulle slot che vuoi.

    Il rollover della parte principale del bonus è di 30x, mentre per le potenziali somme vinte grazie ai giri gratis è di 15x.

    Si otterranno, così, i Real Bonus, che andranno giocati almeno 1 volte, prima di poter essere prelevati.

    Migliori slot in catalogo: 4.6/5

    Approcciando al palinsesto di tale casino online possiamo notare che le slot più in vista sono Book of Ra Deluxe, e la sua principale competitor Legacy of Dead.

    In entrambi i casi parliamo di slot a tema Egitto, che non fanno parte delle slot con jackpot, ma che presentano delle buone percentuali RTP. Una è di Greentube, mentre Legacy of Dead è di Play’n GO.

    I simboli sono quelli della tradizione egiziana antica, più le principali figure delle carte da gioco, con scatter e wild.

    Potrai provare tutte e 2, grazie alla presenza della versione demo di ogni gioco.

    Metodi di pagamento: 4.5/5

    Per tutti i depositi e prelievi, potrai usare:

    • Visa, Mastercard e Postepay
    • Bonifico
    • Paypal, Skrill e Neteller
    • Paysafecard, OnShop

    Come altri migliori siti di slot, il minimo depositabile è 10€, così come il prelievo minimo.

    Il tempo di accredito è tra 1 e 3 giorni lavorativi, in base allo strumento finanziario scelto, che partono da dopo l’approvazione della richiesta di prelievo.

    Valutazione finale: 4.6/5

    >> Sblocca subito il bonus da 3.000 (Spin Palace)

    5. Betway – Migliore slot online con bonus a base di free spin in Italia

    Pro

    • Bonus benvenuto fino a 1.500€ e 300 Super Spin;
    • 100 free spin alla convalida del conto gioco;
    • Più di 1.000 giochi disponibili;
    • Presenta la versione demo;
    • Tornei slot con fino a 1.000.000€ in palio;
    • Licenza ADM n. 15216.

    Contro

    • Slot con jackpot esigue;
    • Pochi tavoli da gioco.

    A chiudere la nostra top 5 delle migliori piattaforme di slot online c’è Betway, un terzo casinò online collegato con Jackpot City e SpinPalace.

    A nostro parere, presenta il miglior bonus di benvenuto a base di giri gratis, proponendone di 2 tipi, Super Spin e free spin.

    Palinsesto di slot online: 4.5/5

    Il bouquet di giochi disponibili mette in campo una buona varietà, con circa 1.000 titoli, forniti da alcuni grandi software developer.

    La qualità offerta è abbastanza alta, dato che i prodotti sono sviluppati da fornitori come NetEnt, Greentube ed Evolution.

    Potrai sempre scegliere il tema che più fa per te, grazie ai filtri presenti nella colonna di sinistra della pagina principale delle slot. Tra queste, ci sono anche poche slot con jackpot.

    Bonus di benvenuto slot: 4.9/5

    • Circa 1.500 giochi in catalogo;
    • Requisiti di gioco bassi;

    Al primo posto, lo abbiamo già detto, c’è SNAI, probabilmente il più importante casinò online AAMS, con anche tante sale scommesse nel territorio italiano.

    Palinsesto di slot online: 4.9/5

    Il catalogo di giochi di slot proposto da SNAI è davvero di alta qualità, dal momento che propone circa 1.500 titoli di pregevole fattura.

    Si classifica così in alto per via di un palinsesto fatto interamente dalle migliori software house al mondo.

    Palinsesto di slot online: 4.8/5

    Chiude il nostro podio Gioco Digitale, un sito di slot italiano, lanciato nel 2007, dapprima nato per il poker online, e che poi ha ampliato la sua offerta.

    Si aggiudica la medaglia di bronzo perché presenta il miglior palinsesto, nella sua totalità, fatto da slot di primo piano, slot con jackpot, ma anche giochi di carte, e giochi da casinò.

    Palinsesto di slot online: 4.9/5

    Nel catalogo di Gioco Digitale ci sono circa 1.300 giochi disponibili per i giocatori in totale, la maggior parte dei quali è fatta di slot machine.

    Migliori slot in catalogo: 4.7/5

    Il catalogo è davvero di grande qualità, abbiamo detto, e la punta di diamante è sicuramente rappresentata dalle slot Gonzo’s Quest ed Extra Chilli.

    Sono 2 titoli abbastanza diversi. Infatti, Gonzo’s Quest è una slot a tema avventura, il protagonista è un conquistador spagnolo alla ricerca di El Dorado.

    Extra Chilli Megaways, invece, pur essendo comunque ambientata nel Centro America, ha una trama diversa. Ci porta, difatti, in Messico, per la precisione, durante una festa a base di chili.

    Il sistema Megaways, targato Big Time Gaming, consente di arrivare fino a più di 100.000 linee di pagamento, offrendo un’esperienza esaltante e divertente.

    Palinsesto di slot online: 4.6/5

    Il catalogo di Spin Palace mette in campo una buona varietà di slot machine, anche se la quantità raggiunge a fatica i 1.000 titoli.

    Troverai, ad ogni modo, i prodotti delle più importanti case di sviluppo, come Greentube, NetEnt, Play’n GO ed Evolution.

    Nella pagina dei giochi di slot potrai scegliere tra i diversi temi, con appositi filtri. Anche se manca il filtro per le slot con jackpot, un piccolo punto di favore lo segnala la presenza della versione demo di ogni gioco.

    La varietà di giochi disponibili per ogni giocatore mette in campo, ad esempio, titoli come Gates of Olympus, Immortal Romance e The Dog House.

    Bonus di benvenuto slot: 4.9/5

    Con un nuovo conto gioco su Spin Palace avrai diritto a ricevere il miglior welcome bonus tra le piattaforme che stiamo recensendo.

    Il rollover della parte principale del bonus è di 30x, mentre per le potenziali somme vinte grazie ai giri gratis è di 15x.

    Migliori slot in catalogo: 4.6/5

    Approcciando al palinsesto di tale casino online possiamo notare che le slot più in vista sono Book of Ra Deluxe, e la sua principale competitor Legacy of Dead.

    In entrambi i casi parliamo di slot a tema Egitto, che non fanno parte delle slot con jackpot, ma che presentano delle buone percentuali RTP. Una è di Greentube, mentre Legacy of Dead è di Play’n GO.

    I simboli sono quelli della tradizione egiziana antica, più le principali figure delle carte da gioco, con scatter e wild.

    Potrai provare tutte e 2, grazie alla presenza della versione demo di ogni gioco.

    A nostro parere, presenta il miglior bonus di benvenuto a base di giri gratis, proponendone di 2 tipi, Super Spin e free spin.

    Palinsesto di slot online: 4.5/5

    Il bouquet di giochi disponibili mette in campo una buona varietà, con circa 1.000 titoli, forniti da alcuni grandi software developer.

    Selezione dei top siti online slot in Italia

    Palinsesto di top slot online

    Ovviamente, il primo criterio di valutazione è quello del palinsesto messo a disposizione del giocatore.

    La lista dei giochi disponibili deve godere di una buona varietà e numerosità dei prodotti, ma soprattutto un’ottima qualità, data solo dalla presenza di grandi software provider.

    Bonus di benvenuto slot

    Abbiamo valutato anche i bonus di benvenuto messi in campo, tanto per l’importo della somma offerta, quanto per i termini e le condizioni sottostanti, che indirizzano l’uso delle promozioni.

    Abbiamo valutato anche la presenza di ulteriori promozioni e offerte, bonus cashback, slot races e quant’altro, sempre dal punto di vista della ricchezza e dell’equità dei T&C.

    Top slot in catalogo

    Per valutare un po’ più approfonditamente il palinsesto dei siti di casinò di cui stiamo parlando, è utile anche a capire quali sono le top slot presenti nel catalogo.

    Le abbiamo valutate per popolarità, bontà del gameplay, funzionalità speciali, RTP e volatilità.

    Metodi di pagamento

    Ci siamo occupati, infine, di studiare le metodologie di pagamento accettate dai migliori casino online presenti nel nostro articolo.

    Abbiamo favorito la presenza di strumenti molto avanzati come Apple Pay e Google Pay, i bassi limiti minimo di deposito e prelievo, ed i tempi di accredito.

    Perché SNAI è al primo posto tra i migliori siti slot machine?

    The long-awaited follow up to WandaVision, Agatha All Along has been teasing its premise ever since it was announced with a revolving door of titles paying homage to pop-culture staples. Agatha: Darkhold Diaries and Agatha: The Lying Witch with the Great Wardrobe are among the names given to the series up until the official name Agatha All Along was revealed back in May. Like its predecessor, Agatha All Along has already been teasing its appreciation for pop culture at large, but now with the series’ most recent trailer, and the song playing through the background, we’re finally getting a look at the true premise of the series.

    Agatha All Along seems to be paying homage to The Wizard of Oz, drawing parallels between Dorothy’s journey down the Yellow Brick Road and Agatha’s (Kathryn Hahn) journey down the Witches’ Road. Not only does the trailer show Agatha gathering allies just as Dorothy does, but the song playing in the background is eerily reminiscent of “Follow the Yellow Brick Road” in its lyricism.

    With lyrics like “Seeketh thou the road to all that’s foul and fair,” “Gather sisters,” “Darkest hour, wake thy power, earthly and divine,” “Glory shall be thine” and of course “Down, down, down the road. Down the Witches’ Road” it’s hard not to already connect the dots between the two. Add onto that the fact that there’s a clip in the trailer of Agatha looking like Elphaba and Patti LuPone’s Lilia Calderu dressed up like Glinda the Good, and it’s pretty clear where the series is likely going with this.

    Unlike the Yellow Brick Road, however, the Witches’ Road appears to be a lot less welcoming and a lot more dangerous. The eerily winding road is full of trials that Agatha and the witches must face in order to reach their prize, which for Agatha is likely regaining the powers that Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) stole from her.

    But not only do the lyrics of the song hint at the show’s Oz-ian ties, but they also hint at important plot points we’ll likely see. “I stray not from the path, I hold its hand in mine” probably means that Agatha will be straying from the path at some point. The trailer shows Agatha having private conversations with Aubrey Plaza’s Rio, who could be influencing her to leave the others behind to claim the prize for herself.

    “Primal night giveth sight, familiar by thy side” seems to hint at the role that Billy Kaplan (Joe Locke) will have on this journey. Locke himself told Empire that his character is a “familiar,” “an assistant to the coven.” But whether he’s truly there to help them or is instead after the prize at the end of the road for himself, and potentially his mother Wanda, has still yet to be determined.

    The Witches’ Road was first introduced in the 2016 run of Scarlet Witch comics by James Robinson and Chris Visions. In this arc, Wanda travels to the Witches’ Road, which is a realm only accessible to sorcerers and practitioners of magic, with the ghost of Agatha looking for the source of a sickness infecting magic.

    Based on what we know about Agatha All Along so far, it seems like each trial might contain its own separate homage, just as each WandaVision episode paid homage to a different era of sitcoms. Between the haunting Wizard of Oz-esque “Ballad of the Witches’ Road” written by EGOT winners Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez (who also penned the song “Agatha All Along” from WandaVision) and the musical entrance the show received at D23 this last weekend, it seems like the show might be leaning into even more of a musical theme than WandaVision. (And with a legend like Patti LuPone in the cast, why wouldn’t you?)

    Like WandaVision before it, Agatha All Along looks like it will be a unique entry into Marvel canon, full of fun Easter Eggs for both Marvel and pop-culture fans alike. Agatha’s journey down the Witches’ Road is at the core of the series, and it will be interesting to see just what she decides to claim if, or when, she gets to the end of it.

    Norman Osborn a.k.a. the Green Goblin is not just one of the most important supervillains of all time; he’s also one of the most well-known. Thanks to Willem Dafoe’s performance in the Sam Raimi Spider-Man films, and in Spider-Man: No Way Home, and the character’s prominence in Marvel’s Spider-Man and its sequels on the PlayStation, Gobby is a recognizable baddie.

    News coming out of Disney’s D23 presentation promises that the upcoming animated series Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man will offer a very different, and very compelling version of Peter Parker’s archenemy.

    Norman Osborn will be voiced by Colman Domingo, the Tony and Oscar-nominated actor best known for his stunning turns in Euphoria and Rustin. Domingo will bring his significant presence and charisma to the role, helping to sell the force of personality that makes Osborn such a powerful figure in the Marvel Universe.

    Speaking at a D23 panel (via Popverse), Domingo sees the Green Goblin as “the ultimate supervillain” and will be “following in the footsteps of Willem Dafoe.”

    Those observations give us an idea that Domingo’s version of the Green Goblin will be as diabolical and crazed as always. But other information about the part suggests that he’ll be a version of Norman unlike any other seen before. In this reality, Norman will become Peter’s mentor as Parker makes his first steps as a wallcrawler, a role occupied by Tony Stark in the MCU. According to the show’s producers, Norman will be Peter’s “man in the chair,” referring to Ned’s job supporting the MCU Peter with computer-based reconnaissance.

    Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is set to give fans more of that sympathetic side, which makes the Green Goblin more menacing and Peter’s life even more tragic. The series will allow Norman and Peter more time to build their bond, especially as a key player in the first days of Spidey’s development. According to showrunner Jeff Trammell (via Popverse), “Norman has good intentions, but he hasn’t embodied the hero role like Tony has… but sometimes the methods in which he is sharing with Peter may not work out in everybody’s best interests.”

    The idea of Norman working with Peter isn’t totally foreign. After all, Dafoe’s Osborn tries to bond with Peter by telling the boy that he’s also “something of a scientist.” The PlayStation games portray Osborn as a loving father to Harry, who respects Peter as his son’s best friend.

    That’s a remarkable change from the comics, in which Norman is almost always a cruel schemer who takes pleasure in dismantling Peter’s life. Over the years, Norman kills Peter’s girlfriend Gwen Stacy, makes Peter think that he’s a clone, kills and/or kidnaps his Aunt May and daughter May, and more.

    As horrifying as these moments are, there’s always been a certain pathos to Norman throughout the years. His Goblin persona has often been portrayed as a separate personality, one that ruins Norman’s own life as much as it does others. In fact, this version could make the Green Goblin the one who takes away Peter’s closes mentor by turning Norman Osborn against him.

    It’s that connection between the evil of the Green Goblin and the tragedy of Peter Parker that makes Spider-Man the greatest superhero of all time and Norman Osborn his greatest enemy.

    Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man comes to Disney+ in 2024.
