There’s never been a better time to be a Star Wars fan in terms of quantity. There’s more Star Wars on screen and on the page now than ever before in the franchise’s history. From Disney+ series to video games to The High Republic books and Marvel comics, you can experience new adventures in the galaxy far, far away pretty much any way you want to right now. If Lucasfilm were able to get some movies off the ground, we’d be able to say that the franchise is firing on all cylinders.

Interestingly enough, Star Wars‘ hopes on the big screen now rest with The Mandalorian, the same franchise that launched the galaxy far, far away’s TV push. Out in 2026, The Mandalorian and Grogu, a continuation of the stories told in the hit Disney+ series, will be the first new Star Wars movie since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm then has plans to follow up Mando in theaters with at least two more films, which could include the new Rey Skywalker movie and Dave Filoni’s New Republic film. Of course, there are actually plenty of Star Wars movies in the works, but whether they ever see the light of day remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, although all of the Star Wars stories we’ve seen on screen in the past five years have arrived via Disney+, Lucasfilm’s TV slate isn’t quite as expansive as it once was. Coming up for sure are the new series Skeleton Crew and second seasons of Andor and Ahsoka. As for another season of The Acolyte, time will tell, as it hasn’t yet been officially renewed by Disney.

Let’s take a more detailed look ahead at all the new Star Wars movie and TV series coming up on Lucasfilm’s slate…

Upcoming Star Wars Movies

While the franchise has continued to thrive on the small screen and on the page, it’s a very uncertain time for Star Wars movies. In the aftermath of 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker, Lucasfilm has announced a number of films that have struggled to move forward, including Patty Jenkins’s Rogue Squadron, which was delayed despite originally being in the works for a 2023 release. Lucasfilm has a few other films in development, with an eye on releasing the first of several new movies in 2026. Here’s the breakdown of what’s been announced:

Star Wars: The Mandalorian Season 3

The Mandalorian & Grogu

Release Date: May 22, 2026

Director: Jon Favreau

After becoming the biggest show on Disney+, The Mandalorian is jumping to the big screen, leading the charge for a whole new slate of Star Wars movies in theaters. The film, which will begin production this year, is directed by Jon Favreau. We know next to nothing else about the movie except it’ll set our beloved father-son duo on a new adventure after the events of season 3.

Untitled Rey Skywalker Movie

Release Date: TBA

Director: Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy

Writer: Steven Knight

Starring: Daisy Ridley

That’s right, Daisy Ridley will reprise her role as Rey Skywalker in a film set 15 years after the Sequel Trilogy. Directed by Ms. Marvel‘s Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and written by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, the movie will see Rey working to finally rebuild the Jedi Order for a new era of Star Wars. And Ridley is as excited about her return as we are, teasing recently that Obaid-Chinoy’s “idea for the story is cool as shit…No spoilers, but she gave me a rundown of the entire story. If it weren’t amazing, I would have been like, ‘OK, call me in five years.’ But it’s worthwhile.”

Ridley teased a few little things about Jedi Master Rey in the movie in an exclusive interview with Den of Geek here.

Lars Mikkelsen as Thrawn in Star Wars: Ahsoka

Untitled New Republic Movie

Release Date: TBA

Director: Dave Filoni

After spearheading a mini-shared universe of shows on Disney+ as an executive producer, veteran Star Wars creator Dave Filoni is getting his shot at a live-action event film that will “close out the interconnected stories told in The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and other Disney+ series,” according to StarWars.com.

Star Wars Eclipse Jedi

Untitled James Mangold Movie

Release Date: TBA

Director: James Mangold

Writers: James Mangold and Beau Willimon

This movie is set 25,000 years before the events of the Skywalker Saga and tracks the origin of the Jedi, according to writer-director James Mangold: “I thought about a biblical epic, like a Ten Commandments and the dawning of the Force. Where did the Force come from? When did we discover it? When did we know how to use it? And a story just started developing.”

Taika Waititi Star Wars Movie

Untitled Taika Waititi Star Wars Movie

Release Date: TBA

Director: Taika Waititi

Writer: Taika Waititi and Krysty Wilson-Cairns

After his stint directing (and voice acting) on The Mandalorian, Taika Waititi will return for a big screen offering!

“Taika’s approach to Star Wars will be fresh, unexpected, and…unique,” said Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy in a statement in 2020. “His enormous talent and sense of humor will ensure that audiences are in for an unforgettable ride.”

There’s very little in the way of actual details right now, not even a release date yet. Last we heard, Waititi was still working on the script, with Kennedy suggesting the director could also star in the film.

Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian in Solo: A Star Wars Story

Release Date: TBA

Writer: Donald and Stephen Glover

Starring: Donald Glover

The smoothest scoundrel in the galaxy is getting his own movie from Donald Glover, who is set to star in the movie as well as write the script with his brother Stephen. We know little else about the project, but the Glovers promised to have creative control of this next chapter in Lando’s story.

“I said yes because I like the characters and my kids love Star Wars,” Glover told THR recently when asked why he’d decided to helm the project. “And at this point, I just know when something’s going to be good, because you’re really fighting the industry when you [put your imprint on a franchise of that magnitude]. I feel like I have enough control.”

Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron

Release Date: TBA

Director/Writer: Patty Jenkins

Somehow, Patty Jenkins returned. Despite originally being slated for a 2023 release until creative differences and scheduling conflicts caused Jenkins to leave the highly-anticipated X-wing movie set after the Sequel Trilogy, the writer-director confirmed in March 2024 that she’s back on the project and working on a draft of the script for Lucasfilm. Jenkins told the Talking Pictures podcast: “We’ll see what happens. We need to get it to where we’re both super happy with it.”

Untitled Shawn Levy Movie

Release Date: TBA

Director: Shawn Levy

Deadpool 3 director Shawn Levy is working on a Star Wars movie, although we don’t know when we might actually see this one: “I’ve been talking with Kathy Kennedy for awhile now, and she’s been aware of my passion for this franchise for a long time. The stars finally aligned, and she came to me and was like, let’s do something here. And that’s as much as I can say. But this is definitely development and not yet close to prep. So there’s a lot of work to be done,” he told Collider in 2022.

After the success of The Mandalorian, it should come as no surprise that there are way more Star Wars TV series coming to Disney+ in the next few years. Here’s what you have to look forward to next…
